I'm a former Burlington resident who is quite shocked at the latest news regarding the Marion Tavern. The Town, while having the very best of intentions, has not been a very good steward of this property. It should consider turning the property over to an organization that has experience in managing historic properties such as the Marion Tavern.
Perhaps the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities (SPNEA), Massachusetts Historical Commission, the Trustees of Reservations or even the Department of Conservation and Recreation, as part of its heritage parks program would be interested (or they may be able to offer some aid or expertise to the town).
Due to its role as a temporary parsonage, stagecoach stop, tavern and museum (operated by the Sleeper family in the 1950s) this is one of the most historically significant buildings in Burlington, if not Middlesex County. The Town took on an obligation to preserve the building when it acquired it,!
If it cannot fulfill that role, it needs to transfer it to someone who will. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to keep this priceless peice of Burlington's history from being destroyed (I now live in Boston and am close to the offices of some above mentioned organizations).
