… absolutely yes!

We too are at the crossroads in Burlington; whether it is both important and cost effective to preserve our Town history. The answer in my opinion is absolutely yes! I have traveled all over the world and all major towns and cities have one thing in common, acknowledgement and respect for the past.

One could argue that the Marion Tavern is our only important and highly visible historical site. As we continue to redevelop our "128/Route 3 Edge City," a link to what made Burlington great must also be continually "developed." The Tavern represents both who and what we are as Town. It is a highly important building for at this point in time not what it is NOW, but what it will represent to our future.

Financially, it is also important, as families and large corporations Alike prefer to reside in places with historical roots.

I believe that we need to preserve the Tavern.

I also believe that we need to think about "out of the box" solutions to saving the Tavern. I although do not know if these have been suggested (as examples). In fact, I may have discussed with some of you the following:

--Remove municipal ownership and create a specific trust: This MAY allow groups like "This Old House" and Shawsheen to assist (They will not get involved with municipally owed structures).

--"Sell the name" and allow limited presence" of the Tavern; i.e. The ________Marion Tavern Corporate Center in Burlington; (with a lease of specific meeting room(s). I have attended many scientific, clinical and corporate meetings within in historic facilities

--Take a loan and develop the structure a corporate meeting center

These are just a few ideas that we need to consider to save our history.

Whatever is ultimately done, I believe through discussions within the Town that a referendum will ultimately be needed and take will place.

Thank you, for allowing to express my thoughts,

Ed W
